Yak Development at High-Altitude Areas of Pakistan

Developing the yak farming sector in GB’s high-altitude mountain communities โ€” unlocking meat, milk, fiber, and draught animal potential to improve livelihoods in Pakistan’s northern frontier.

Project Overview

Pakistan’s High-Altitude Livestock Heritage

The yak is an iconic high-altitude livestock species uniquely adapted to the extreme conditions of Gilgit-Baltistan’s mountain terrain. Long a traditional part of mountain community livelihoods, yak farming has remained underdeveloped compared to its economic potential.

This LDDB-led PM initiative develops the yak sector through breed improvement, productive management training, value chain development, and market linkages โ€” enabling GB mountain communities to generate better incomes from this unique genetic resource.
